How Hand Tappers Work in EMDR
- The Setup:
- The client holds a small vibrating device (called a “tapper”) in each hand.
- The tappers are connected to a control unit operated by the therapist.
- Bilateral Stimulation:
- The tappers vibrate alternately: first the left, then the right, and so on.
- This rhythmic pattern of alternating left-right stimulation engages both sides of the brain.
- While This Happens:
- The client is asked to bring to mind a disturbing memory (along with its associated thoughts, feelings, and body sensations).
- As the memory is held in mind, the bilateral stimulation occurs.
- After a set of taps (a “set”), the therapist pauses to check in with the client and ask what came up.
- The Goal:
- Over multiple sets, the distress associated with the memory tends to reduce.
- New insights, emotions, or perspectives may emerge as the brain reprocesses the experience.
- The memory itself doesn’t disappear, but it becomes less emotionally charged or disturbing.
